Sawtooth Elementary students compete in Math Masters





Sawtooth Elementary students recently competed at a Math Masters competition, with Ray Dressely receiving a ribbon for placing in the top 20 in the individual competition. Nine Sawtooth Elementary students participated in the regional Math Masters Challenge held at First United Methodist Church in Duluth on April 21.

Coached by Duane Hasegawa, the fifth-grade students competed individually and as teams on eight sets of mathematical problems in this competition.

Representing Sawtooth were Kathyrn Carpenter, Andrew Hallberg, Tighe McHugh, Amery Oberg, Ray Dressely, Weston Heeren, Hunter Gomez, Cy Oberholtzer and Marshall O’Phelan.

Math Masters began as a fifth-grade math competition program in 1989 with teams from 44 schools taking part. In 1995 the competition was expanded to include sixth-graders, and this year there are approximately 5,500 fifth- and sixth-graders registered to compete.

Math Masters is designed to promote excellence in critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities as well as provide recognition to students for academic effort and achievement.
