The Lutsen Fire Department was paged to historic Lutsen Resort at 8:39 a.m. on Friday, November 21. A caller had reported a fire in the sauna in the resort’s pool area.
Lutsen Fire Department was on the scene by 8:52 a.m. and Tofte Fire Department responding for mutual aid was on scene shortly after. Cook County Ambulance and Cook County Sheriff Deputies also responded.
The emergency fire sprinklers worked and there was no visible flame when firefighters arrived, but they found embers burning in the ceiling of the sauna. Firefighters were able to extinguish them and contain the fire to the sauna.
There were no injuries.
The fire is believed to have been started when a wooden sauna bucket placed too close to the sauna ignited. The bucket burned and the heater and sauna wall was scorched.
