“Without electricity, heat, plumbing, or water filtration, our lives would be much more difficult than they are now,” wrote Sarah Toftey in her first-place essay about public utilities.
Sarah’s winning entry was selected from six submissions sent to the Grand Marais PUC essay contest.
For her winning effort, Sarah was awarded $500. Runner-up Noah Roth received $300 and Hannah Toftey—Sarah’s twin—placed third and received $200.
Sponsored statewide by the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association and locally the Grand Marais PUC, the scholarship contest is open to all Cook County high school seniors. This year six seniors submitted short essays to Grand Marais PUC explaining what they felt the PUC contributes to the standard of living for the people living and visiting here.
This year’s theme was, “Municipal utilities: good for all of us.” This applied to municipal electric and natural gas utilities. Judges looked for originality and relevance of the theme to the writer and his/her city.
