Cook County Deputy Will Sandstrom of Grand Marais was nominated in the “Outstanding Service” law enforcement category for the annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) awards. He was among 50 nominees, the largest group in all categories.
The Minnesota MADD Statewide Recognition Awards Ceremony was held at the state Science Museum on Feb. 27. There were multiple categories for awards. There were five categories for law enforcement, two for judges, two for prosecutors, and three for community awards.
Each nominee was recognized by standing at the awards ceremony as their names were read and they each received a certificate that reads “Mothers Against Drunk Driving honors you for your dedication towards our mission to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking.”
The description for Outstanding Service states: “MADD is seeking nominations for law enforcement officers who have made a difference in the last year by going above and beyond in the area(s) of education, prevention, policy or enforcement and whose efforts are making an impact in reducing alcoholrelated death and injury on Minnesota’s roads.”
Sandstrom was nominated by Lindsay Mielke, Cook County Sheriff ’s Office dispatcher and Chris Thostenson of the State Patrol. Some of the reasons for the nomination include outstanding DWI enforcement, enforcing underage drinking laws and youth tobacco laws, and drug enforcement. Both the nominations specifically noted Sandstrom’s involvement and dedication on the North Shore Drug Task force.
