Plans are well underway to once again offer a Cook County Fair that has something for everyone. This year’s fair, to be held August 19-22, 2009, will have giant inflatable activities for kids, food, music, and horses!
The Sawtooth Mountain Riders Saddle Club will be hosting a “Fun Day” of timed events such as barrel racing, pole bending, speed dash, key-hole racing, and much more. The club will also offer a breed demonstration to show off all the wonderful breeds of horses that live in Cook County. Audiences are always amazed at the wide variety and the knowledge of the horse owners. The horse events will take place in the new horse arena, just up the hill from the Community Center where fair exhibits are displayed.
Fair organizers are encouraging people to think about what they would like to display at the fair. Fair Board member Sharon Hendrickson said school kids especially should save those special projects. Students can win ribbons—and small cash prizes— for items entered in the fair. “It is a lot of fun for kids to see their work on display,” said Hendrickson. “And a little bit of cash is nice for them too!”
Premium booklets, describing the various categories of things that can be entered in the fair, will be available the beginning of July. And although many people immediately think of produce when they think of the county fair, there are categories for so much more. Flowers, sewing, carpentry, painting, drawing, photography, baking, collections, and much more are eligible for friendly countywide competition.
Organizers know there will horse events, a cookie contest, a cake walk, vendor displays, and exhibits, but there is always room for more. “We would especially like to see something for kids,” said Hendrickson.
If you would like to have a display at the fair or would like to volunteer in some way, contact Sharon Bloomquist at (218) 387-1714 or Community Center Director Diane Booth at (218) 387-3015.
