Cook County High School Track and Field Coach April Wahlstrom’s boys and girls track teams did quite well at the MSHSL Section 7A sub-section track meet held May 26 at Mesabi East High School, but no one did better than Ryan Christianson.
The junior sprinter won the 100 and 200-meter races to qualify for the Section meet. If Ryan finishes in the top two sections, he will be eligible to run in the state meet.
Ryan’s winning times at sub-sections for the 100 meters were 11.64 and 24.22 for the 200 meters.
MaCoy Fairbanks ran 13.22 and Talon DeBoer 14.26 in the 100 meters. Finn Taylor ran 27.33 in the 200 and Elias Pszwaro 30.74.
Ben Rex placed 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 59.27. Talon DeBoer ran 65.25 and Isaac Schmidt 65.33 to place 16th and 17th.
Adam Oberg took 10th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.97. Grant Oberg placed 13th in 2:40.23 and Ethan Fish ran 2:52.03 to take 18th.
Kyler Hansen ran 5:12.46 to nab 6th place in the 1600 meter run. Tristan Surbaugh was 11th in 5:41.37, and Merlin Higgins ran 5:44.04 to place 13th.
Keean Selin finished 11th in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:31.01. Andrew Hallberg placed 7th in 12:24.72, and Haddon Taylor was 10th crossing the finish line at 13:067.
The men’s varsity 4×100 meter relay team of Finn Taylor, MaCoy Fairbanks, Ben Rex, and Ryan Christiansen placed 5th with a time of 49.53.
In the men’s varsity 4×200 meters, Finm Taylor, MaCoy Fairbanks, Rylan Brown, and Isaac Schmidt ran 1:52.34 to place sixth.
Ben Rex, Brayden Schmidt, Rylan Brown and Kaleb Berka took 7th in the 4×400 meter relay, running a time of 4:10.55.
The boys’ 4×800 meter relay team of Brayden Schmidt, Kyler Hansen, Kaleb Berka and Merlin Higgins placed fourth in 9:35.02.
Arlo Christensen placed 15th in the shot put with a throw of 30-11. Lute Jansen took 27th with a put of 19-5, and Arlo finished 16th in the discus with a throw of 79-03. Lute Jansen placed 26th with a throw of 53-11.
Kaleb Berka long jumped 15-02.50 to place 12th in that event. Elias Pszwaro took 19th with a leap of 11-11.25
Kaleb Berka picked up some team points in the triple jump with his 6th place finish. Kaleb triple jumped 34-09.00. Grant Oberg placed 12th with a leap of 29-`11.25.
In the team standings, the boys finished 6th out of 12 teams.
Girls’ results
Molly LaVigne qualified for the final in the 100 meters and placed 7th, running 13.80. Kalina Dimitrova took 22nd in 15.78 and Siena Woerheide ran 16.84 to place 29th.
Brianna Monson placed 9th in the 200 meters. She ran 30.50. Sophia Sheehan placed 18th in 32.79 and Mary June Wharton was 23rd in 34.64.
Genevieve Silence was the 14th finisher in the 400 meters, crossing the line in 74.09 seconds. Siena Woerheide placed 22nd in 1:20.99.
Anna Hay ran the 800 meters in 2:44.77 to place 10th. Lexi Surbaugh finished 12th with a time of 2:52..11.
Anna Hay placed 2nd in the 1600 meters with a PR of 5:45.55. Lexi Surbaugh placed 7th with a time of 6:12.49.
Cece Chmelik finished 8th in the 3200-meter run in 16:27.28.
Sylvie Hansen ran 57.80 to take 8th place in the 300-meter hurdles.
Annabelle Silence, Brianna Monson, Sophie Sheehan and Molly LaVigne took 7th place in the 4×100 meter relay, running 59.02. The same foursome teamed up to take w4tdh place in the 4×200 meter relay, running 2:02.64.
Anna Hay, Lexi Surbaugh, Sylvie Hansen, and Genevieve Silence placed 8th in the 4-x400 meter relay with a time of 5:01.66.
In the shot put, Cece Chmelik took 10th with a throw of 25-11. Kalina Dimitrova placed 13th with a throw of 24-10. Patience Sifferath threw 15-11 to place 27th.
Kalina Dimitrova threw the discus 63-1.50 to take the 14th. Cece Chmelik placed 17th with a throw of 59-08 and Patience Sifferath threw 30-00.5 feet to take 26th place.
Kylie Viren placed 25th n the long jump with a leap of 8-6.75.
Emma Crook triple jumped 23-02.50 to take 11th place in that event.
The girl’s team placed 10th out of twelve teams.
