Grand Marais residents were startled to see a plume of thick black smoke on the east end of town at a little before 11 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2014. A call reporting a trailer on fire on 5th Street came in to Cook County Law Enforcement at 10:58 a.m.
Grand Marais Fire Department, Grand Marais First Responders, Cook County Ambulance and Maple Hill Fire Department were paged and on the scene by 11:02 a.m. to find not a house trailer, but a recreational vehicle (RV) on fire, parked approximately 20 feet from a residence and outbuilding at the east end of 5th Street. As firefighters worked to connect hoses to the nearby fire hydrant, the RV burst into flames and numerous explosions were heard.
Once water was available, firefighters doused the flames and the propane tank near the RV. The fire was extinguished and emergency responders were clear of the scene at 12:50 p.m.
The Grand Marais Fire Department was paged back to the scene later in the evening because neighbors heard a hissing sound and could smell propane. The fire department determined that the control on the propane tank had been damaged by the fire and a technician from Como Oil & Propane was called to make a repair.
The RV owner is Lawrence Scully of Grand Marais. He was not injured, but the RV and all of its contents were a total loss.
No details have been released on the cause of the fire. The incident is under investigation by the state fire marshal.
