Runners record fast times at Esko

We have opened our outdoor track and field competition season with a pre-meet, which took place on April 11, 2017 at the Esko Public School Stadium.

In the field we had a group of brave jumpers who agreed to show up and learned how to jump. They performed well and got some good starting marks. One stand out was Sam O’Phelan who long jumped 16’6” on his third jump ever. This performance placed him 5th in the meet. Jack Haussner gave triple jump a whirl and finished in 8th place with a jump of 34-11.

Several girls throw the shot put, we held our own and we competed with some of the highest marks in the meet. Alicia Smith was a top performer in shot put followed by Julia Larsen; they came in 6th and 10th.

Lucy Callender and Alicia Smith were the top Viking performers in the discus. Smith had a 71-foot power throw, which landed her 5th and demonstrates that there is much potential for the rest of the season. Callender finished in 7th place with a throw of 67-11.

On the track we had many stand out performances. In the 800m run Maya McHugh broke away on the bell lap, which led her to win by several seconds with a time of 2:37. Leif Anderson was our top finisher for the boys with a time of 2:24 and a 9th place finish.

Zoe Nonemacher had a gold star day. She finished in 1st place in the 100m dash with a time of 13:52. She finished in 1st place in the 400m dash with a time of 66 seconds. Then if that wasn’t enough she pulled a 2nd place finished in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.24. What a great start to the season for her. She will be a strong leader of our team as an 8th grader.

Molly Thomas finished fourth overall in the 400m dash with a time of 1:08. Louise Romberg, an 8th grader, ran a quick mile, which led her to a 5th place finish with a time of 6:11.

O’Phelan also rounded out our boys’ 4×200 meter relay team of Henry DeArruda-Weaver, Jack Haussner, and Vaughn Swindlehurst. They pulled towards the front of the group and finished in 3rd place with a time of 1:47.
