Roy Carlson





 

 

Roy Carlson passed away in Shoreline, Washington on December 18, 2017. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 3, 1927 into a family of three children. He was a long-time summer resident at the family cabin at Mayhew Lake on the Gunflint Trail. He was a member of the Mid-Trail Property Owners group and the Gunflint Trail Historical Society. Roy was preceded in death by his wife Rose. Roy is survived by his son Rex, sisters Doris and Carol, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Roy worked in the shipping industry in various positions from 1945 to 1985 and retired as chief engineer. Roy was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in 1952-1953. He had many interesting experiences from his worldwide travels and was an excellent storyteller. Roy and his wife, Rose, enjoyed traveling in their retirement years. Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, Russia, Romania, the Caribbean, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, Sweden, Norway, Alaska were some of the destinations they visited. Roy was able to spend four months a year at his cabin on Mayhew Lake after his retirement. The balance of the year Roy spent his time in Arizona while he was not traveling. Roy was a true lover of nature. He enjoyed canoeing, camping, fishing, hiking, gardening and blueberry picking. He also was an excellent craftsman. He designed and built two cabins on Mayhew Lake. He was an accomplished dancer; he enjoyed square dancing, ballroom dancing and polkas. He was a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan and experienced incredible joy when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016. He also enjoyed watching football games.
