The Cook County Vikings softball team had a rough start to the season, losing two before earning their first win of the season.
The girls traveled to Moose Lake on Tuesday, April 12 to face the always-tough Rebels.
Things were looking up after the first inning of play. The Vikings were ahead 2-1 and playing with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, said Head Coach Jessie Anderson.
But the Rebels came back to score three runs in the second, one run in the third, two in the fourth and tacked on one more run in the fifth inning, all the while holding CCHS to two runs. The Vikings scored one more run in the seventh inning to fall 8-3.
Anderson said her team is young, sporting six sophomores, one freshman, one junior and two seniors.
“We ended up giving up seven walks in the game and started kicking the ball around the infield. Once that started, we lost our enthusiasm,” Anderson said.
Brea Boomer led the way offensively with two hits. Kristina Rude had a double.
While things might change, for now the starting line-up is Kristina Rude, shortstop; Cecilia (CeCe) Schnobrich, second base; Alexis Eliasen, infield; Brea Boomer, outfield; Chelsey Sorensen, infield; Sarissa Falk, pitcher; Anna Carmen, catcher; Signe Larson, outfield; Rachel Wieben, outfield; Theresa Morrin, outfield; and Taryn Logan, outfield.
Vikes fall to Carlton
The CCHS girls played at home against the Carlton Bulldogs on Thursday, April 14 and the game was over after four innings when the Vikings succumbed to the 10-run rule with a score of 13-0.
“We made six errors right away and you can’t do that against Carlton,” said head coach Jessie Anderson, adding, “They are a powerhouse. They hit the ball hard and they hit the ball far. They also play strong defense. We just weren’t in the game.”
Vikings defeat McGregor 9-3
The fast pitch softball team traveled next to McGregor on Tuesday, April 19 and came away with their first win of the season.
After three scoreless innings, the McGregor Mercs scored two runs in the fourth inning. The Vikings rallied however, scoring three runs in the fifth inning and led 3-2 into the sixth inning.
The Vikings tacked on two more runs in the sixth while McGregor stayed close, adding one more run.
Going into the seventh and final inning, the Vikings knew they would have to do something special to preserve their lead over an always tough Merc team, and they did, scoring four runs while holding their rivals scoreless.
“Kristina Rude did a great job of pitching and our defense was strong throughout the game,” said coach Jessie Anderson.
Rachel Wieben also was key with her bat. “Rachel got her first hit of the season. It was a home run. Next time up to the plate she hit a double off of the wall. It was great to see her have a big game for us,” said Anderson.
CeCe Schnobrich and Kristina Rude each went 2-4 with a double while Anna Carmen was 3-4 with three singles. Brea Boomer was also 2-4 at the plate.
“We’re young but we have a lot of potential,” said Anderson.
The Vikings next home game is Tuesday, April 26.
