Rosemary Lamson of Grand Marais has been named to the International Nurses Association, an organization designed to bring together outstanding nurses from all specialties and backgrounds.

Lamson, whose nursing career and experience spans 54 years, said the recognition was a most welcome surprise.

Lamson, a registered nurse, recalled that a representative of the New Yorkbased organization called in response to an anonymous nomination and asked, “You’ve had a long history of working in public health. Could you tell us about your career?” Then in October, she said, “I got another call welcoming me to the International Nurses Association.”

Lamson, 76, is currently the parish nurse at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and as such facilitates the holistic health of the congregation. She is a 1955 graduate of Cook County High School and attended the College of St. Scholastica, earning her nursing degree (Certified Public Health Nurse) from the University of Minnesota in 1959. She later earned a master’s degree in Psychology in Aging from the College of St. Scholastica in 1991.

During her career, Lamson worked at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Ill., the Cook County North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais, and as director of the Cook County Health Department and Public Health Nursing in Grand Marais for 26 years, retiring in 1997.

Lamson is a fourth-generation health care provider; her father was a doctor, her mother a nurse. She said she is honored with the latest recognition and has no idea who nominated her. “It was quite a surprise,” she said.

Lamson will be featured in the 2013 edition of Worldwide Leaders in Health Care.
