Root beer and rides at Senior Center

Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day. After lots of rain, fog, and dampness, it is time for some sunshine to plump and ripen the berry crop. Get your baskets and buckets ready for our Senior Center August blueberrypicking trip.

July is full of Senior Center activities to keep your mind off those fragrant, flavorful, juicy berries. All experienced adults, family, friends and neighbors of experienced adults are invited to the “Summer Kegger” at the Senior Center, located at 10 N Broadway, on Wednesday, July 7, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Enjoy visiting friends and neighbors, entertainment by local musicians, and all of the root beer and root beer floats you want for a $5.00 donation to the Bus Trip Fund.

Grand Marais State Bank will be sponsoring bus service to the Kegger. A free bus will be leaving Birch Grove in Tofte at 12:15 p.m. For pick-up along Highway 61, call the Senior Center. Tell your Arrowhead Transit bus driver that you are going to the Kegger and Grand Marais State Bank will pay for your ride!

We will be ending July at the Senior Center in style with a fashion show from the 1st and 2nd Thrift Store on Thursday, July 29 at 2:00 p.m. Come to see the variety of stylish, affordable clothing available. We are looking for men, women and children of all shapes and sizes to model the clothes.

Between the Summer Kegger and the Fashion Show there is a wide variety of Senior Center activities. Gunflint Trail history will be featured at lunch on July 13 with the author of Gunflint:
The Trail, The People, The
Stories
and Gunflint Cabin,
John Henrikson. Sign up for our guided tour of the Gunflint Historical Museum and Nature Center at the former Chik Wauk Lodge on Tuesday, July 20. The trip will leave the Senior Center at 10:00 a.m, costs $18 for transportation and includes a lunch stop at Trail Center.

History will also be the topic when a Cook County Historical Society representative joins us for lunch on Wednesday, July 14. Other July lunch guests include Public Health nurses Joni Kristenson and Amy Lacina; Council on Aging Treasurer Warren Anderson; our Veterans Service Officer; and the sheriff. Check the calendar for date and time.

The Lunch Express will take a group to tour the WTIP studios on Tuesday, July 27, followed by lunch next door at the new Alan Campbell’s restaurant. We will leave the Senior Center at 11:00 a.m. and transportation is free. The Grand Portage Express will be leaving Grand Marais at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 12 and costs $11.00.

On Monday, July 26, at 2:00 p.m. the Senior Center will host a Cook County District 3 Commissioner Candidate Forum moderated by Rhonda Silence, editor of the Cook
County News-Herald.
We hope to have all eight candidates present to answer voter questions.

There will be AARP driver safety classes at the Senior Center and at Gunflint Conference Center in July. Look for evening classes in August and September. Check the calendar or call the Senior Center for details.
