In 1846 Fr. Frederic Baraga braved Lake Superior to reach Grand Portage and was blown off course by high winds into the safety of the mouth of the Cross River. Grateful to God for his providence and having been saved from the storm he erected a wooden cross at the site. Since then his wooden cross has been replaced by a granite cross that stands on the lake shore accessed by a walking path from the parking lot at the end of Father Baraga’s Cross Road in Schroeder.

Each summer since 1969 Zoar Lutheran Church in Tofte has held Sunday morning services on the rocky shoreline near Father Baraga’s Cross. Pastor Roger Livdahl initiated the idea as a way to provide an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to worship God in the beauty of his creation and, like Fr. Baraga offer thanks for His providence. Held with permission from the Catholic diocese, which owns the monument and walking path, the brief service is non-denominational in nature and open to all.

Pastor Daren Blanck, the current pastor at Zoar, says he loves the opportunity to worship in the fresh air, often with the sound of the waves lapping against the rocks and the songs of the birds in the trees. It’s also a fun way to meet some of the many visitors who participate in the 8 a.m. service as a part of their North Shore experience.

On Aug. 18 to commemorate 50 years of “church on the rock” Pastor Livdahl, who is now retired and living in the Twin Cities, will be preaching and leading the worship service at Father Baraga’s Cross. Zoar Church members John and Carol Markwell will provide music. All are welcome to participate in this lakeside service.
