Two bits of positive news came out of Grand Marais this week, at least in my estimation. First, the Ice Storm article regarding the robotics competition. It was an extensive piece of writing on another amazing group of young people in Cook County. These “kids” are building a robot for the regional tournament in Duluth as others have in the past. This is serious work that requires use of current scientific knowledge that these students apply with a big helping of creativity to compete and succeed—competing is the big step. They also reflect numerous other efforts and successes that these Cook County students exhibit each year in many of their endeavors. Great news!
The second was the decision to move the Border-to-Border route to start in Lake County. For me that was good news as reflected by other commentaries over the last few weeks on this idea. The news article was certainly generous in providing space for the diatribe delivered by an advocate for the B2B and his view of action or inaction by Cook County officials. That somewhat tarnished the shine of good news for the economic and natural environments of our County to be treated to that opinion and view of the Cook County consideration of this idea—plus a somewhat veiled threat of dire consequences.
I also appreciated Tim Sullivan’s note regarding a County Commissioner’s potential conflict of interest, always an important consideration for public officials.
