Robert Zimmerman, 93, of Grand Marais, died Sunday, May 8, 2011 in the North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais.
He was born October 17, 1917 to Sam and Inga (Berg) in Grand Marais, where he grew up and graduated from Cook County High School. Robert married Virginia Ammerman at Fort Snelling in March of 1942. He served in the Army and was stationed in Burma and India during World War II. He returned home in 1945. Robert worked various jobs throughout his life including working on the Alaskan highway, two stints in Thule, Greenland working on the airport, and managing the municipal liquor store in Grand Marais for 25 years.
He was a member of the American Legion and was guardian of the flag for
Memorial Day Services.
Robert enjoyed golfing, chopping wood, and time spent at his cabin on Devil’s Track Lake.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; and an infant brother.
He is survived by his daughter, Roberta (James) Phillips of Grand Marais; grandchildren, Robert (Maureen) Phillips, of Burnsville, and Greg (Deb) Phillips of Kansas City, MO; two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Nick of Burnsville; brother, Perry of Mission, TX; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog Tyler.
