Robert Wesley Sherer


Robert Wesley Sherer died on Tuesday afternoon, October 8, 2019, at the North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais.

He was born on December 24, 1942, in East Chicago, Indiana.

He was married to Roxeann Zielie Sherer on September 3, 1988, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Portage.

He is survived by his wife and his daughter, Mary L. Sherer (Daniel Deschampe), and his grandsons Evan Robert, Aidan Michael, and Callan Ernest Deschampe.

Robert is also survived by one brother, Melvin D. Sherer; and six sisters, Cheryl Kauppi (Lonny), Janis Deschampe (Larry), Elizabeth Simmons (John Sr.), Marlys Sherer (Duane), Marlene Meyers (Peter), and Joanie Johnson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Kenneth Sherer; his sisters Delores Dinger, Sandra Johnson, and Barbara Hakala; and his brothers Ronald, Kenneth, Lyle, Stewart, and Myron Sherer.

Robert’s first wife, Jeanette Sherer, preceded him in death on August 4, 1984. Her daughters, DeeDee and Barbara, and their children live in the Twin Cities area.

Robert attended Cook County High School and graduated from Greer Shop Training, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois, with a diploma in Body and Fender Repair on December 2, 1963.

He lived and worked in Chicago and the Twin Cities before moving back to Grand Portage and working in the community in a variety of jobs. He was one of the first security guards at the Grand Portage Casino starting in May 1990.

After his retirement he experienced an accident at home and several surgeries followed. He received in home care until he was admitted to the North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais on Jan. 17, 2018 for 24-hour skilled nursing care.

He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, especially his three grandsons.

A memorial gathering to share a potluck meal and a memory or two will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 in the Log Community Building in Grand Portage.
