Robert W. Hattery,

87, Grand Marais, died Sunday, October 21, 2012 in the Cook County North Shore Hospital.

Robert was born to Wilber and Ruth (Adolphus) Hattery in Chicago, where he grew up and attended schools.

He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II in the Philippines and received a Purple Heart. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a Ph.D. in international relations. He taught political science at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Indiana Bloomington.

Robert was an avid canoeist and canoed in the Boundary Waters beginning in 1934. He and his wife Eleanor moved to Grand Marais in 1988 and started the North Shore Public Discussion Opportunities program.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wolfe, and sisters Patricia and Lois.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Eleanor; children David (Brenda), Lor (Rusty) Reddoch and John (April); stepsons Jeff, Allan (Kirsten), and Mark (Susie) Evans; grandchildren Andrew, Abbey, Cade, Myles, Quinn, and Nic; sister, Suzanne Hattery; niece, Patricia Wallace; and nephew, Richard Hattery.
