Robert St. John, 73, of Grand Marais, was called home to the Lord on July 21, 2017 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Bob was born Aug. 1, 1943 to Claude and Isabella (Amundson) St. John in Minneapolis. He grew up in Richfield where, in high school, he met the love of his life, Mary.
Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, joining in March 1961, and was stationed aboard the USS Independence. After he was honorably discharged, Bob and Mary were wed in Richfield on Sept. 11, 1965. They made their home in Richfield where Bob worked for the telephone company as a cable splicer and lineman. From there Bob and Mary moved to Nisswa with their two daughters, Angela and Susanne. Bob worked in television repair, which he continued to do until the family moved to Grand Marais in 1990.
While in Grand Marais, Bob continued to repair televisions and began to install satellite systems until he retired in 2012. Bob enjoyed many things in life. He liked to take his family to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area where they would spend time camping, canoeing and fishing. Bob also had a passion for woodworking. He would spend time in his woodshop working on Intarsia woodworking. His woodwork was in demand and kept him busy. Bob continued this until Parkinson’s disease left him unable to continue. He also enjoyed sitting on their deck looking over Lake Superior.
Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary (Kerich) St. John of Grand Marais; his daughters Angela (Mike) and Susanne of Grand Marais; sister Colette (Al) Wiehr of Hutchinson, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Barbara Floody.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 31 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Grand Marais from 3 to 5 p.m.
