Robert Norman Helmerson, “Bob,” age 69 of Hibbing, Minnesota died suddenly at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth on Thursday, August 27, 2015 shortly after being diagnosed with leukemia.
Robert was born August 3, 1946 to Norman Harley Helmerson and Ruth Jennie Blomberg.
He attended Cook County High School and shortly after enlisted in the Navy. When discharged from the Navy, he moved back to Grand Marais where he met and married his love, Anna Jones.
He started work at Reserve Mining in Silver Bay, where he put in 17 years before topping off his 30 years at LTV Steel in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. He also worked for the State Highway Department and as a bartender at the American Legion Post 413 in Grand Marais.
Bob loved playing cards, poker nights with friends and family and his daily cribbage games with his good friend, Joe. He enjoyed his Thursday night pool league and he especially loved to jump on his Harley with Ma and just ride. He had a huge heart, was quite the comedian and would do anything he could for his friends or family. He loved his kids very much and always went above and beyond where they were concerned.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Annie; daughters Jody Helmerson of Grand Marais, Nichole (Armand) Hocking of Hibbing and son Corey (Vanessa Puhek) Helmerson of Hibbing; nine grandchildren Tamra Lee Helmerson-Parent, Anna and Recko Ahonen, Tyler and Brylee Hocking, Arielle Schaefer, Jade, Alyssa and Brianna Helmerson, whom he will be sadly missed by.
He also leaves behind sisters Janet (Ray) Nagy of Pittsburgh and Sandra (Wally) Everson of Grand Marais along with many nieces, nephews and friends who all love him very much.
He is joined in death by his parents and brother Jack Blomberg.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Binsters in Hibbing, Minnesota from 3-6 p.m. and Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the American Legion Post 413 in Grand Marais from 3-6 p.m. to honor and toast Bob.
Memorials to the family are preferred.
