Known to all by his childhood nickname “Kip,” a term of endearment, Robert Lyle Lundquist died in his sleep at his group home in Bloomington May 2, 2015. He was 68.
Kip was born Nov. 9, 1946, along with his twin brother Russell Lee, in Duluth to Phil and Florence Lundquist of Grand Marais. His early years were on the North Shore near Kadunce Creek in Colvill, and he then moved to the Carson’s Bay area of Lake Minnetonka.
At the age of 2, our sweet little boy fell ill with encephalitis, which left him with a lifetime of neurological problems. But he lived with undaunted courage in facing up to his many challenges, and he developed into a wonderful artist and humorist. He shared his father’s genius as a cartoonist and his mother’s mischievous sense of fun.
Kip is preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Ken Weborg, and brothers John Philip and Russell Lee.
He is survived by brother James Lundquist of Waite Park, sister Pauline (Tracy) Zimmerman of Grand Rapids, stepbrother Gary (Christa) Weborg of Chaska, special niece Kari Lundquist of Rosemount, and nine other nieces and nephews.
One of Kip’s great pleasures was to visit the cabin at Devil Track and later mom’s apartment at Harbor View. He loved seeing and talking to relatives in Grand Marais, and delighted everybody with his memory of old acquaintances and fun times.
A gathering for family and friends will be at Maple
Hill Cemetery early this summer.
The family wants to thank Kyle House supervisors Carol Benoy, Ann Yngsdahl, and Carrie Ragnow for the care that made Kip’s life so much better over the last 10 years. Also, many thanks to social workers Linda Moore and Barb Cook.
