Robert (Bob) Edwin Omoth, age 90, passed away unexpectedly on November 14, 2020, at his home in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara J. (Swenson), daughters Nancy Metzger (Randy) and Pamela Postiglione (James), and grandchildren, William, Justin, Morgan, Garrett, and Natalie. He is preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Jerry.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law Gerald Elbers and his niece Stephanie Donaho (both with summer homes in Cook County), and his niece Cindy Omoth Uhlig.
A native of the Twin Cities, Bob worked as an aerospace engineer for over 20 years and contributed to both the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs, then ended his career as a manager in the defense business.
Bob was introduced to the North Shore as a young man, and he was a regular visitor to Cook County since the early 1950s – with many fond memories of fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing. Bob was the “rock” of the family – the one who let the rest of the group enjoy the wilderness while he quietly and without fuss worked to make sure the practical side of things ran smoothly – everything from hauling water from Lake Superior and loading block ice for refrigeration in the old days, to arranging all the cabin openings and closings and technology updates for multiple family members in more recent years.
Bob and his wife Barbara have spent most of their summers at their cabin in the Gunflint Summer Home Group for well over 30 years. Bob served as president of the Gunflint Lake Homeowners Association for a number of years, and made many friends on the lake as a result.
Bob remained active throughout his life – walking, reading, driving and spending time with his family until the very end. He was known for his witty sense of humor, patience, and positive outlook. He was a loving husband, and wonderful father and grandfather. We are all blessed to have had him in our lives. He will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Friends of the Boundary Waters.
