For the third year, mountain bikers from across the United States and Canada will be heading to Lutsen to take part in the Lutsen 99er, tackling the topography of the North Shore, riding from the Lake Superior shoreline to the top of the Sawtooth Mountain ridge. This year’s event will be held Saturday, June 29.
Both the Lutsen 99er and the shorter Lutsen 39er start at Lutsen Mountains, however riders shortly part ways with the 39er course taking riders down to Highway 61 and up the Caribou Trail and then into onto forested trails. The climb up the Caribou Trail is no Sunday stroll—the route takes riders up 1,000 feet in about five miles.
The 99er riders go east and begin a fantastic Category 3 climb. Once over the ridgeline, the course takes advantage of the glacially sculpted terrain, rolling hills, and numerous lakes and streams. This area is the southern range of the boreal forest.
A kids’ race (ages 5 to 13) will also be held on the morning of June 30.
Organizers say, “Bring the entire family and make the Lutsen 99er a family affair in 2013!”
Spectators are encouraged to come out and watch the exciting race, which has grown every year. The event website includes a map of the route so you can pick a scenic spot to watch the action.
An exciting movie trailer about the Lutsen 99er was produced by local filmmakers Beau Larson and Karl Hansen. To see the action, visit www.lutsen99er. com, click on race and then movie trailer.
