Lifelong Cook County resident Richard I. “Dick”
Anderson
died peacefully at the North Shore Care Center on Saturday, October 16, 2010. He was 87 years old.
Dick was born in Grand Marais to Carrie and Allan Anderson in 1923. His father founded the Grand Marais State Bank in 1912 and his mother was one of 13 children born to early county pioneers Catherine and Andrew Jackson Scott.
Growing up in the area, Dick enjoyed numerous summers canoeing with friends for two to three months at a time in the area now called the Boundary Waters. He also enjoyed many summers with his family at the cabin on Hungry Jack Lake, a lake named af.ter his grandfather,
Hungry Jack” Scott. From these experiences he gained a sense of place and a lifelong appreciation for hunting and f.ishing.
Af.ter graduating from Grand Marais High School, Dick attended Pennsylvania Military College in Chester, Pennsylvania and graduated with a degree in business and as a lieutenant in the U.S. army. Dick served in World War II and was again called to duty during the Korean conflict.
Af.ter World War II, Dick returned home to Grand Marais to begin working in the bank and married the love of his life, Lou in 1948. T.hey raised three children and were married for 58 years upon Lou‘s death in 2006.
Dick took over the Grand Marais State Bank as director and president af.ter his father retired and, upon his own retirement in 1989, counted over 42 years as a community banker. During his time as president of the bank he served several years as an of.f.i- cer for the Minnesota Banker‘s Association. He took great pride in servicing the community he loved with honesty and integrity. Af.ter retirement Dick and Lou enjoyed spending time at their home in Grand Portage, f.ishing for trout around Isle Royale and of.f.isp endin g their w inters in Tucson. During his lifetime he served on many civic projects and was particularly proud of his involvement in the Grand Portage Development Corporation in the 1970s. As an enrolled member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa he was instrumental in helping to develop the Grand Portage Lodge.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Lou and his daughter, Colleen.
He is survived by his son, Rick Anderson of Grand Portage and daughter, Collette Pederson of Grand Marais, grandsons Jesse (Michelle) Whipkey, great-grandaughters Mia and Louella, grandsons Barry Pederson, Joey Pederson and Cory Pederson, granddaughter, Carrie (Josh) Majerus, great-grandsons Jack and Aaron, granddaughter Marcie (Joe) Alexander, grandsons Darion and Dylan, granddaughter Laree (Ryan) Robards, and great-granddaughter Ella Colleen.
T.here will be a memorial service celebrating the life of Dick Anderson in November.
