Regretfully, Richard “Doc” Rose passed away suddenly on September 13, 2012 at age 74. Doc was born in St. Paul, MN and attended St. Paul Central High School before attending Winona State University. Always interested in sports, Doc became involved in several local and national hockey teams before becoming the trainer for the 1968 Olympic hockey team. This position led him to an opportunity to become trainer for the Minnesota North Stars, a position he held with vigor for nearly two decades. Doc enjoyed traveling the world with his teams and was extremely dedicated to his profession and his players. Having spent summers on the North Shore throughout his life, he made it his home after work-related back injuries brought him to an early retirement.
He especially loved his dog, being an uncle and great-uncle to all of us, fishing for long hours with family members and watching sporting events on TV. He could always be counted on for a good story, for honest and sound advice and for instigating abundant pranks and laughter. He was a devout worshiper, and though in constant discomfort, he maintained a positive outlook and continued to be as active in the outdoors as possible. He was a kind and generous person to friends, neighbors and relatives.
Doc left behind his beloved companion, Tessa (dog); sisters, Mary Peterson (Lloyd), Carol Broton (Dick); and brother, Michael Rose (Lynn). Also survived by nine loving nieces/nephews and nine loving great nieces/nephews. Services were held September 19 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Roseville, with interment at Roselawn Cemetery, Roseville.
The family wishes to thank those who have expressed their condolences; we have been touched and comforted by your presence, your caring words, and the sharing of your own special memories of Doc. We will never forget the impact he made on each of our lives, and take comfort in our precious memories of him and in knowing he is resting at peace.
Memorials preferred to St. John’s Catholic Church of Grand Marais, ASPCA or US Olympic Committee.
