Seven Cook County High School 10th through 12th graders helping middle school students with their homework – and reinforcing their own academic knowledge along the way – were recognized for their volunteer spirit Thursday, November 19, 2009. Carol Youngberg of the North Shore Federal Credit Union’s Silver Bay office traveled to Cook County to acknowledge their contributions.

“I really thank you for doing this,” Youngberg said. “We really appreciate it.”

School Counselor Bryan Hackbarth also expressed his appreciation. “It’s a huge thing you are doing,” he said. “It’s very unselfish, and it’s just so giving …It makes such a big difference. …We’ve seen that every year.”

According to Hackbarth, the CCHS “Academic Club” is more than just help with homework – it’s a student enrichment club offering academic tutoring, peer interaction, and mentoring.

Two or three of the tutors are available in the school’s Academic Center to tutor middle school kids the last period of each day. So far this year, students have asked for help with English, social studies, and math.

To encourage kids to ask for help, a $25 prize is awarded each month to a lucky middle schooler who has put his or her name into a drawing box each time he or she received help from a tutor.

This year’s tutors are sophomores Ashley Deschampe and Molly Zafft, juniors Brea Boomer and Kristina Rude, and seniors Essa Jacobsen, Taryn Logan, and Carly Puch.

At the end of each semester, tutors will each receive a check for $50. At the end of the year, they will each have earned ½ credit and Counselor Hackbarth will write them letters of recommendation.

Youngberg said that the North Shore Credit Union also rewards peer tutors in Silver Bay and Two Harbors. Tutors in those communities work with students from kindergarten through 12th grade and help each other as well.

Rewards for the tutors at CCHS come in various forms. “I’m
learning things,” said Essa Jacobsen.

“It refreshes my memory,” said Carly Puch, adding that she has enjoyed building relationships with the kids she has tutored.

Molly Zafft summed it up simply: “It’s a lot of fun.”
