After last year’s hilarious “The Bald, the Brave and the Beautiful” competition ended with all four competitors—Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk, Chief Deputy Leif Lunde, Gunflint Trail Fire Chief Mike Prom, and Gunflint Assistant Fire Chief Bob Baker—getting their heads shaved, attendees at the Mush for a Cure Pink Prom Party thought nothing could top the insanity. Perhaps not, but this year’s contest promises to be just as crazy.
Facing off to see who can raise the most money for the other guy— because the person who receives the most donations will have his head shaved—are Jason Manning of 95 KQDS radio in Duluth and Cook County’s own Bob Carter of WTIP community radio.
Asked why he agreed to put his stylish silver locks on the line, Bob Carter replied, “I have no idea how I get myself talked into these things. I have a very strong idea that I will not look good bald. I think people will be telling me to wear a hat.”
He added, “Please, go to the website and pledge for the other guy!”
Jason Manning also said the whole idea is crazy, but he said, “If someone wants to pay me money to help find a cure for breast cancer and all I have to do is shave my head, I’ll do it!”
However, Manning’s goal is not just to beat WTIP’s Bob Carter. His eye is on the real prize—if The Bald, the Brave, the Beautiful earns $10,000, his longtime friend, Hovland-area musher Mark Black will also shave his head.
“I’m going to hit up local businesses, all my friends. If I can earn enough to see Mark’s head shaved it will all be worth it!” said Manning, adding that he already raised about $100 from his bowling team. “Slowly but surely, we’ll get there,” he chuckled.
