Recently the Cook County Chamber of Commerce and Visit Cook County ran a survey asking area businesses about their plans for their staff and customers on the topic of going back to masking as a response to the COVID delta variant. Two weeks ago, Cook County Public Health Supervisor Grace Grinager issued an advisory recommending that everyone wear masks when they are indoors in public spaces and the two groups wanted to know how businesses were responding.
According to Chamber Director Jim Boyd, the online response from businesses was telling. Boyd released the following information in an email.
“We had 258 responses, which is a very good sample. About 55 percent said they were changing their policies because of Grinager’s recommendation. When you add in an unknown number of businesses who were already requesting or requiring masks, that suggests a solid majority of businesses responding will be requesting or requiring masks.
“Drilling down, 246 answered the question about customers: Of those, 20 percent said they will request masking, 35 percent said they will require masking and the remaining 45 percent said they will leave masks entirely optional.
“For employees, 247 responded, of which 9 percent said they will request that employees wear masks, 48 percent said they will require that employees wear masks and the remaining 43 percent would leave it up to the employee whether to mask or not.
“So, it would appear that masks will be either requested or required in a majority of Cook County businesses as a response to the delta variant and to Grinager’s public health advisory.”
