On a great day to ride a bike last Saturday three waves of gravel grinding bicycle racers left from downtown Grand Marais on a sunny day and traversed through the back country roads to take part in the Le Grand du Nord.
110-mile results
There were 166 finishers, 135 men and 31 women who completed the 110-mile race. The average finishing time was six hours and 53 minutes and 46 seconds.
Kyle Fry, 34, of Shuniah took first place overall with a time of 4:45:40. Second place went to Grand Maria rider Will Surbaugh, 21, who completed the course in 4:50:46. Zach Gusa, 44 of St. Paul placed third in 4:55:28.
Will Surbaugh was a talented runner and avid bicycle racer in high school. Today Will is a professional mountain bike racer. Will graduated Cook County High School in 2019. Following high school Will took a year off to work and travel. In 2020 Will moved to Durango, Colorado where he is majoring in physiology and continues to race in mountain bike events all across the United States.
Shane Steele, 33, Grand Marais placed eight in 5:08:36. Patrick Pawlowski, 31, Grand Marais, finished 74th in 6:43:45.

There were 378 riders, 286 men and 88 women and three coed racers in the field. Joseph Renier, 31, Marine on St. Croix finished first overall in 2:32:01. Jake Campbell, 29, St. Paul was one second behind Renier and Eric Tudor, 33, Sioux Center, finished third in 2:33:33. Local finishers Jay DeCoux, 40, Grand Marais, placed 36th in 2:51:54. Caitlin Guarasci, 39, Thunder Bay, placed first in the Women’s Division with a time of 3:00:05. Kathleen Venon,36, Grand Marais, placed second four seconds back of Guarasci in 3:00:09. Shannon Carrol, 43, Eden Prairie, finished third in 3:02:52. Local finishers Ruth Wagner, 31, Grand Marais, placed 5th in the women’s field, 63rd overall in 3:06:20. Dylan Dragswiek, 44, Grand Marais, placed 66th in 3:07:36. Emma Spoon, 33, Grand Marais, finished 73rd in 3:09:37. Emma placed seventh among women. Max Wahlers, 61, Grand Marais, placed 90th in 3:16:09. April Wahlstrom, 40, Grand Marais, placed 168th in 3:40:34. Braidy Powers, 68, Grand Marais, placed 239th in 3:59:29. Chris Obrien, 66, Grand Marais, finished 338 in 4:44:01. David Eckel, 64, Grand Marais, placed 378 in 5:31:01. 26-mile results A field of 119, 61 men, 56 women, and two coed racers completed the marathon distance in an average time of 2:20:22. Tiffany Kari Cizmas, 42, Duluth won the overall title and women’s title with a finish time of 1:37:30. Nicholina Schiewe, 41, Thunder Bay, placed fourth overall and second in the women’s division with a time of 1:43:34. Marilyn Ailey, 49, Thunder Bay, placed sixth overall and third in the women’s field with a time of 1:45:11. David Nettleton, 39, Moose Lake placed second overall and first for men in 1:39:52. Samuel Hoover, 19, St. Joseph placed second in 1:42:21 and Sean Foley, Hermantown, was the third male rider in 1:43:36. Arlo Litterest, 10, Grand Marais, placed 45th in 2:07:29. Jane Asay, 39, Grand Marais, placed 46th in 2:07:39. Tim Miller, 59, Grand Marais, finished 66th in 2:21:32. Lori Rothstein, 45, Grand Marais, placed 100th in 2:47:38.
