It looks like it will be another banner year at the Grand Marais Rec Park.
Grand Marais Parks and Recreation Director Dave Tersteeg told the two park board members that came to the January 4 meeting that the Rec Park online subscription booking service worked very well over the New Year’s weekend.
“Roughly 450 reservations came through over the weekend and steady calls Monday morning (January 3) mostly came from folks who needed help to fix their mistakes for their attempts at online booking,” Tersteeg told park board members Steve Aldrich, and Bob Nesheim. And, because there wasn’t a quorum, no action could be taken at the meeting, just information distributed, and some discussion held.
The online service took reservations for July 2022.
Tersteeg said this is the second year the park has offered reservations month-to-month, and the demand has “proven to be a very good move.”

Not too long ago, North House’s sailing vessel, the Hjordis, was noticed sitting low in the water by former North House employee Mathew Brown, who for years piloted the ship. Tersteeg said Matthew saw the slowly sinking ship while having lunch at the Angry Trout. Upon closer inspection, it was found the hull was quite full of water from a leak that developed around the prop tube. The leak flooded the interior and created the need for an immediate haul out, with Tersteeg contacting the Viant crane company from Duluth to take the boat from the harbor. Typically, the Hjordis is de-iced in the lake and left next to the North House dock for the winter.
Nesheim said it was all hands-on deck to drain the Hjordis and the selfless volunteers who came forward on Christmas Eve worked late into the night to keep the ship from suffering any more potential damage.

Landscape architect CJ Fernandez is working on construction documents for The Landing in the Community Connection Corner. Tersteeg said the goal is to have the documents ready for the board’s March meeting so they can be reviewed, which will provide a late winter, early spring bid window, with construction hopefully completed in 2022.
Two other projects related to the adjacent right of way will soon be ready for discussion and planning. Those include the new entrance sign to the park, and then a decision will be made about the old bike path that dips down from the highway that runs along the northern border of the trailer park.
One idea for the old bike path is to use it to route riders and walkers from the Gitchee Gami trail to Bathhouse One, should those folks need a public restroom. Aldrich asked if that would put an undue burden on Bath House One, but Tersteeg replied that he didn’t think so because it is not heavily used. However, that will be a topic for the whole board to take up at the board’s next meeting in February.
