About a dozen hearty Republicans ventured from their homes on a cold March 1st evening to attend the local party’s yearly organizational meeting held at the Cook County Community Senior Center. This meeting was held to elect people to local office and to hear updates from elected representatives who serve Minnesota in Washington.

Marc Breitsprecher and Garry Gamble were elected Cook County co-chairs, while Mary Petz accepted the nod to fill the secretary position and Jim Hall agreed to fill the treasurer position.

Rae Piepho was nominated to represent the party as a delegate to the State Central Committee, which will be April 16, and her husband, Butch, was nominated as an alternate.

Mary Petz was nominated as a delegate to represent the local party at the 8th District convention in Grand Rapids. Garry Gamble agreed to be the alternate.

Gamble read a short letter from Representative Chip Cravaack. In his letter Cravaack said, “My primary focus since being sworn in has been on creating jobs in the 8th District and across the Great State of Minnesota. We are blessed to live in a beautiful and bountiful state, one that welcomes tourists from around the world, is rich in natural resources, and boasts fertile land that is ripe for development. Minnesota is quite simply a great place to live. Unfortunately, regulations from bureaucrats in Washington continue to put an unnecessary strain on our economy and way of life. Congress must roll back many of these excessive regulations— regulations that were written to satisfy a radical left-wing agenda.

“Our country is near bankrupt and we must make severe cuts to federal spending this year.

“Let’s be honest, the cuts are going to be painful and unpopular with many, but we have no other choice. Spending in D.C. has been out of control far too long and we have to turn this ship around and chart a new course—one towards fiscal sanity.”

In other matters, a discussion was held on how to best reach people in the county. Breitsprecher suggested using the Internet, cell phones, and other electronic products as a forum to bring people together. That idea was met with enthusiasm and will be discussed more in the future.
