The Rendezvous returned to Grand Portage National Monument on Friday, August 12 – Sunday, August 14 with 127 camps and 240 re-enactors. Grand Portage’s very own Stone Bridge Singers opened the event with a traditional drum ceremony and welcome to the public and camp participants. John Stealey, a first-time re-enactor to the event, demonstrated his late 18th century replica hot air balloons made from paper and fish glue while sending 18 unmanned balloons into the air over the weekend.
A blacksmith and tinsmith were present conducting (ice creeper and tin cups) workshops for the public and camp while demonstrating their crafts. Lacrosse matches were held on Friday and Saturday in the early afternoon. Over the Waterfall played music during the Saturday night dance from 8-10 p.m., which was open to the public.
Other highlights from the weekend included the lady’s tea social, workshops for kids’ wooden box making, making a trade mirror, finger weaving, pouch making, knife and tool sharpening, corn husk doll making, voyageur storytelling and magic show, and the usual round of contests and games. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and it was great to gather again with familiar friends, family, and visitors during the event after a two-year hiatus.
