Remembering Commissioner Pete Walsh

There was laughter and tears as Commissioner Pete Walsh’s siblings and daughters joined with his colleagues of Lake County to remember and appreciate Walsh’s warmth, humor, and commitment.

This week’s Lake County Board meeting began with several family members of Commissioner Peter Walsh and others in attendance in-person and on zoom, with the purpose of spending some time grieving, reminiscing, and story-telling about Walsh, who passed away on Thursday January 19.

Remembered dearly by many as someone who always had a joke or a story to share, it was recalled that when Walsh was called in the middle of the night by a constituent asking, “Why isn’t my road plowed?” Walsh answered, “Because it’s snowing!”

Walsh’s family spoke of how much he loved his job as a commissioner, and that the day he won the election to county commissioner was “the proudest day of his life.”

His colleagues with the county spoke also of his passion for firefighting. Walsh once spoke directly and passionately to the governor about paying local firefighters fairly.

The group shared a moment of silence in honor of Walsh’s service to the community he cared deeply about.

Walsh served as county commissioner for District 1 since 2013, and was a charter member of the Finland Rescue Squad, and former Finland Fire Chief.

Editor’s note- Peter grew up in Cook County and was a 1973 CCHS graduate.
