Relax and enjoy fall at the Senior Center

Things are really starting to quiet down around the county. It is quite a change from the rush of August, with Fisherman’s Picnic. The colors are changing as are the temperatures. It has been beautiful touring around the county. The cooler weather reminds one that there is little time left to do all the chores and batten down the hatches around home. It will be sad to see some of our friends who are snowbirds leave for the winter. They will be missed.

Bill Shaffer has been busy doing some improvements in our kitchen. We now have a shiny new surround for our kitchen sink unit. It makes our kitchen look far more professional and commercial. Thanks, Bill, for all of your kind efforts.

The Senior Center enjoyed some wonderful trips in September. One was up the Gunflint Trail to Trail Center for lunch where we saw the first snow of the season. It was really nice to see that it did not stick! Another great trip was to Lutsen and up the gondola to Moose Mountain.

There are two more Grand Portage casino trips planned on Wednesday, October 5 and Wednesday, October 19. Transportation for these casino trips is sponsored by the casino so they are free to you! Join us and you will also receive $5 in free slot play and earn triple points on your card.

The Senior Center will be starting a new Birthday Club in November. Join us for lunch and we will bake you a cake, provide ice cream and provide decorations. The cost is only $5 for the cake and the party. It is fun to share your birthday with your friends and peers!

In the past, the Senior Center received endowments and gifts of money from the Cook County community. This has not been happening the past few years. We have steadily been reducing our budget and dependency on Cook County government for support. We are in need of additional money, therefore we will be starting a “Giving Campaign.” Watch your mailboxes and the News-Herald for details and please remember the Senior Center when you open your hearts and checkbooks.

We hope you will stop in soon and join us for lunch or any of our many activities. You can also check out our daily menu on the Boreal Access Community Calendar at www.boreal.org. Our monthly newsletter is published the last week of each month. Stop in and pick one up!

Remember, the Senior Center is open and welcoming to all of all ages! News from the “Brighter Side” of aging is provided by Kristen Anderson of the Grand Marais Senior Center. Kristen can be reached at (218) 387-2660 or via e-mail at CCCOA@boreal.org.
