Register to vote and learn about candidates

The pre-registration deadline for the November 4, 2014 election is Tuesday, October 14. Citizens can still vote on Election Day, but it can be complicated.

If you pre-register, your name will be on the voter list and you just sign in at the polls and cast your ballot. Outside the city of Grand Marais, pre-registered voters will receive their ballot in the mail soon. The County Auditor’s Office is sending out the ballots this coming week.

Am I registered?

You must re-register each time you change address, change names or do not vote for more than four years in a row. If you’re not sure if you’re registered, visit the website of the Minnesota Secretary of State at www.mnvotes.org and scroll down to “Register to Vote.”

After entering your name, birthdate and address, the SOS website tells you if you are registered and also provides information on polling place and election precinct.

Learn about the candidates

There are a few more opportunities to learn about the people running for the various elected offices. This week the Cook County News-Herald is sharing a conversation with the candidates for Cook County Sheriff.

The Cook County News- Herald is also joining WTIP Community Radio as it offers several live call-in candidate forums. At press time, WTIP’s Jay Andersen and News Herald Editor Rhonda were preparing talk to candidates for the county board of commissioners.

Coming up are forums with candidates for sheriff and Grand Marais city council seats.

An additional forum, to interview candidates for Minnesota House 3A seat will be held on Tuesday, October 21 at 2 p.m. Listen or call in to the forum with David Dill (incumbent) and Eric Johnson.
