Sign-up has begun for HORT 1003 Master Gardener
Core Course / Horticulture
for the Home Garden.
This is a series of University of Minnesota classes beginning in January 2011 on horticultural and environmental topics such as soils, plant pathology, entomology, herbaceous ornamentals, fruits and vegetables, trees and others.
Course content is researchbased, taught by university experts and geared toward use in the home landscape. Classes are open to Master Gardener interns, ProHort students (those who enroll for personal education or continuing education related to industry certification), and university students, who may earn university credit. Course sites include the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen, the Winona Historical Society, and the UM West Central Research and Outreach Center at Morris. The course is also available online.
The largest student group in HORT 1003
are Master Gardener interns. These are adults who are being educated to bring university researchbased information to the gardening public. In Minnesota, there are over 2,000 active Master Gardener volunteers who teach, present, demonstrate and help citizens to learn best practices in the areas of growing food, youth education, and environmental issues.
U of M Extension Master Gardeners are part of the national cooperative Extension system. Over 94,000 people volunteer as Master Gardeners in 50 states. All registration is online, with payment by credit card only (VISA, M/C or Discover). Class fees are $250 for Master Gardener interns and $550 for ProHort students. University credit students pay the normal university class fees.
Registration deadlines, class dates and times vary by location, as noted on www. mg/umn/edu, along with cancellation and refund policies and fees. For registration questions contact the Cook County Extension office at 218-387- 3015. There is a local county application you need to fill out first before applying to the university.
