Local Girl Scouts are bringing fun to Fisherman’s Picnic while working toward the second highest honor Girl Scouts can receive, the Silver Award. Look for Girl Scout Troop 4077 in front of Joy & Company on First Avenue on Friday-Saturday, August 5-6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will be offering crafts while demonstrating the principals of the three Rs— reduce, reuse, recycle.
Troop 4077 has been collecting used crayons. They will be repurposing them to create animal-shaped crayons. They will also have an assortment of plastic bottles which will be reused to make bird feeders.
And, Troop 4077 member Hailey Smith also invites everyone to stop by Oddz & Endz, the store on the west side of Grand Marais that accepts, recycles and sells household items and furniture. The Girl Scouts brightened up the outside of the building with some paintings. “We used recycled paints!” explained Hailey.
Girl Scout Troops 4325 and 4324 will be at the Kiddie Rides during Fisherman’s Picnic, selling everyone’s favorite festival treat—cotton candy. Look for them before fireworks on Saturday and after the parade on Sunday.
Proceeds from cotton candy sales and the nominal fees for crafts will be used to help Girl Scouts take a trip to Seattle, Washington in 2017.
