Recycle, reuse, reduce is not just a good slogan for Earth Day, April 22, it’s what we all need to do to take care of our planet. Nearly every American household recycles cans and plastic bottles—but what about compact discs? What can you do with damaged music CDs or unwanted DVDs? Fortunately, there is an alternative to tossing these non-decomposing plastic materials in the trash. They can be recycled by dropping them off at any Best Buy store or by mailing to a disc recycling center.
The nearest Best Buy store is in Duluth at 5105 Burning Tree Road. Best Buy has free E-Cycle recycling kiosks right inside the door. In addition to accepting CDs and DVDs, Best Buy also accepts inkjet cartridges, rechargeable batteries, and cell phones.
If you are not making a trip to Duluth, you can recycle your CDs or DVDs, as well as the packaging they come in, such as jewel cases, via mail. There is no charge to recycle at The Compact Disc Recycling Center of America, other than postage.
Simply collect your scratched and unwanted discs and cases—wrap them separately— and mail to:
The Compact Disc
Recycling Center of America
68H Stiles Road
Salem, NH 03079
Mailing discs to be recycled costs a small amount, but you’ll be preventing nondecomposing plastics from reaching landfills or from being burned in an incinerator. And you’ll be doing the planet a favor.
