Recycle City, better than the first time

Ever take something old and tattered and make it better than it was when it was new? No? Me either.

But that’s what Cook County I.S.D. 166 middle school science teacher Emma Spoon’s seventh-grade class did at the end of the school year. Using creativity, imagination, skill and innovative thinking, they turned someone’s trash into innovative, futuristic cities.

Over the last two weeks of school Spoon’s students constructed metropolises out of trash and recyclable materials. “There were eight neighborhoods built within two cities,” said Spoon, who encouraged parents to “see it in person to appreciate the creativity and artistic skill of these kids.”

To add to the authenticity of the project, there were four awards that were given out to specific neighborhoods. Those that went to see the displays cast ballots for their favorite cities. The categories were: Most environmentally friendly, Most energy efficient, Most organized, and Most creative.

Casting a ballot was hard. All of the kids’ work was tremendous. They took what is normally recycled or thrown in the trash and came up with some highly creative places that someday could be built out of great cities.
