Beginning Monday, April 13 the Cook County Recycling Center will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Thursdays.
“After cleaning and sanitizing the facility, we have determined that we can serve the community’s recycling needs while maintaining the safety of the public and county employees,” said Land Services Director Tim Nelson.
It is important that the recyclable materials being brought in are clean and sorted into their appropriate categories, Nelson stated. This will minimize staff’s direct contact with potential COVID-19 contaminants.
“Individuals dropping off recyclables only handle their own materials, but the recycling center staff handles everyone’s items, which provides for much greater risk,” said Nelson.
The center can accept #1 and #2 plastics, clean and with the caps removed. Other materials that will be accepted include magazines, cardboard, newsprint, office paper, aluminum cans, tin food cans, and glass (separated into clear, brown or green colors). The budget shop will remain closed until further notice.
“We want to thank everyone for their patience during this time,” Nelson said. “We ask that, when you do visit the facility, you still practice all of the social distancing guidelines in place. If there are a number of people already dropping off materials, please wait: we would like to minimize the number of folks inside the facility bay at any one time.”
