The Grand Marais Park and Recreation Board met in person on Tuesday, July 13, in the City Hall chambers.
Glorious summer weather and a strong economy have brought more campers and RV owners to the Grand Marais campground than ever for the month of June.
Grand Marais Parks Manager Dave Tersteeg reports that June business was brisk and monthly revenue topped last year’s June total by eight percent.
May numbers for the campground and marina were up about 40 percent from May of 2020, but the campground was effectively closed due to the pandemic.
“Above average temperatures and below average precipitation have made for great camping and boating experiences. Staff are doing great, and most guests are happy,” he noted.
Work on the Parkside public water access is progressing well. “Truck drivers have been great, adhering to our five-mph speed limit through the park. The heavy rock hauling and placement will be concluded soon, followed by concrete work for finishing the new break wall with capped sidewalk and ribboned bench wall. The accessible break wall will be substantially complete by September 28 this fall.
“Also, part of this work will be the demolition of the dog pound and the old Public Utilities Commission (PUC) garage onsite. Next summer, the landside components (parking lot, boat ramp, docks, stormwater management, landscaping, etc.) will be completed.”
A special event application for the August 5-8 Fisherman Picnic was submitted by the Grand Marais Lions and was approved by the park board.
Also approved was a special event application to hold the Stars of the North Music Festival.
The Grand Marais Music Collaborative, a 501c not for profit organization, is once again hosting the one-day festival that will be held Saturday, July 31 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. in Harbor Park.
