Recreation Park Board making plans for summer

Looks like it will be another banner summer in the Grand Marais Recreation Park.

February 1, 2022, was hectic for the small Recreation Park staff.

“We had a busy day for reservations with August arrival dates,” said Grand Marais Parks and Rec Director Dave Tersteeg adding that roughly 400 reservations were taken online and on the phone.

Tersteeg said there were a few minor glitches with the online booking system during the first hour when a lot of calls came in, but “overall, things went smoothly, and most folks were able to get what they wanted.”

WTIP’s Radio Waves looks like it will be returning to the park over the weekend of September 9-11. Staff from WTIP and the park have discussed vendor needs, parking, event hours and COVID-19 protocols.

“This will be the 15th anniversary of the Radio Waves, and we are confident that it can return safely to the park,” Dave said. He added that the radio station was given the green light to plan for the event.

WTIP Director Matthew Brown was welcomed as the Recreation Park’s newest board member.

A Memorandum of Agreement with the Cook County Historical Society for necessary work on the Nee Gee was approved. Plans are to move the Nee Gee indoors someday. According to Tersteeg, Bjorn Tofte will likely be working on the boat on-site throughout the summer season.

Now owned by the Cook County Historical Society, the Nee Gee at one time was a commercial fishing tug that plied the waters of Lake Superior in search of herring and lake trout. Today the craft is on display in the Grand Marais recreation park on the waterfront.

Landscape Architect CJ Fernandez gave a presentation about The Landing in the Community Connection corner.

CJ showed drawings of the landing and walked the board through the 60 percent complete construction documents.

Included in the work was an open bridge archway with elements of a totem influenced by the late great Grand Portage artist (and former college art instructor) George Morrison.

“We hope to have a 90 percent complete check-in with CJ in March; bids in April/May and (just maybe) construction this season,” Tersteeg said.

Under New Business, the park board approved a Special Event Application from Stone Harbor Wilderness for their North Shore Water Festival – July 15 – 17.
