The 2012 Cook County High School Awards Day was held Monday, May 21 and an impressive number of academic and athletic awards and scholarships were distributed to deserving students.
In addition to 28 college scholarships to graduating seniors, there were awards recognizing students for excelling in math and science; for participating in robotics, theater and band; for sports participation and community involvement and more.
CCHS Principal Gwen Carman welcomed everyone and advised the underclassmen to take note of all the scholarships earned by the graduates. She said, “They are receiving these scholarships because they took the time and did the work to complete the applications. These scholarships are highly competitive.”
That thought was echoed by U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Matthew Kangas, a 2004 CCHS graduate who created a scholarship in memory of Joe Cihlar. Matthew’s mother, Alicia Kangas, presented the scholarship and read a statement of congratulations from Lieutenant Kangas who is currently serving in Okinawa, Japan. Kangas finished the note by reminding graduates, “Nothing worth having ever comes easily.”
Each presenter offered well wishes to the graduates and one, Sue Riley, who has established a scholarship in memory of her husband, Daniel Patrick Riley, added a poignant message. She said she and her husband both attended small, rural schools and that was why she decided to offer the scholarship to CCHS students. She said, “There is something wonderful about being in a small school, where your friends knew you before you knew yourself.”
Congratulations to all the award recipients!
