First, thank you to the people in Cook County who volunteered so the community could safely get food. I am sorry that you have been underappreciated by some.
Joan, the spread of Covid-19 is complex, ongoing, with unknown variables. In many states cases are increasing, including Florida, which was one of the first to reopen. Keep in mind each “case” is a human life.
Your inconvenience pales in comparison to those on the front lines who witness firsthand the heartbreak of this disease. This might seem like the flu to you, but for the over 120,000 who have died struggling to breathe, this is a horrible virus. By comparison, CDC data shows the worst influenza death toll in this decade (2017-2018) was 61,000 and that was without social distancing.
We can only imagine how many more people would have been lost to COVID-19 without the measures taken. Social distancing, masks and shelter in place have saved lives. Aren’t the inconveniences worth it?
Sincerely, Kristine Myhre Barton,
Grand Marais
