Cook County News Herald

Reader feels “Do You Know” column is slanted

I have subscribed to the Cook County News-Herald for many years and my family has held property in the county since the 1930s. When the column by Mr. Gamble first appeared under the description of “writing…. about the various ways government works,” I believed I would see a limited series of articles which would provide some “insider insights” into the mechanics of how budgeting, service delivery and policy works in Cook County, as well as how the state process of budgeting affects Cook County.

It may have started that way to a certain extent, but has evolved over time into a platform for a highly politicized and one-sided opinion piece delivering Mr. Gamble’s worldview. A perfect example is the article on Education in the March 10 edition. While I do not share Mr. Gamble’s views on many things, I respect his right to hold them.

I do not respect the News-Herald allowing him to hold them out as educating us on “the ways government works” as if there was disinterested journalism involved. If the newspaper wants a high profile conservative opinion piece, so be it. But at least please label what you are doing honestly. And I, for one, will go on record as making a plea to avoid having a regular column which has an ongoing political slant on either the right or left — we have plenty of that in other outlets.
