Ray William Sjoberg, son of J. Raymond and Mabel Sjoberg, died September 9, 2020. He was 91 years old.
He is survived by his wife of seventy years, Eleanor, his daughter Kristi (David) Carambula, grand sons Nathan and Aaron (Kelly) Carámbula, Christopher (Liz) and Nicholas (Cassandra) Sjoberg, daughter-in-law Cheryl Sjoberg, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Steven.
A lifetime resident of Grand Marais, Ray graduated from Grand Marais High School where he played center on the championship basketball team of 1947/48. After driving ambulance and doing milk delivery, he owned and operated the ElRay Cafe for twenty years. A decade of working in the Zoning and Sanitation Office at the courthouse rounded out his working life.
Ray was a founding member of the Grand Marais Golf Course and the Cook County Curling Club. He was a member of the First Congregational Church. He enjoyed winters in Arizona for 13 years, golfing every day with close Grand Marais friends and new friends, creating very fond memories. Summers on Devil Track Lake, sunrise golfing with the Dew Boys, traveling with Eleanor, and time with his family, were among the highlights of his life.
In honor of Ray’s life, memorials can be sent the to First Congregational Church in Grand Marais.
