Will Ramberg, a Junior walk-on for the Minnesota Gopher’s basketball team, was recently awarded a scholarship, and the offer came from none other than the University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel.
Gabel made an appearance at a Gopher Basketball workout to tell the junior guard the good news. Ramberg’s teammates joyously swarmed him when the announcement came.
Last year Ramberg, who transferred from McGill University in Canada, played in 13 games and averaged 3.7 minutes per game for the Gophers. He played 14 minutes against Illinois and 11 against Iowa for his career highs.
A 2019 graduate of Cook County I.S.D. 166, Will left as the boys all-time leading scorer with 1,346 points. The 6’5” guard averaged 27 points and 14 rebounds a game his senior year. Will was all conference his sophomore, junior and senior years.
Will is believed to be the first player from northern Minnesota to earn a scholarship since Grand Rapid’s Dusty Rychart walked on and led the Gophers in 1999-2002. Rychart, 44, played professional basketball for 14 years in Australia.
