Susan G. Komen died of breast cancer in the early 1980s, but before she passed away her sister Nancy G. Brinker promised her that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer. Brinker started the Susan G. Komen Foundation in 1982 with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donations. Today the foundation has raised and invested more than $2.6 billion in research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries, and it has become the world’s largest nonprofit source of fundraising in the fight against breast cancer.
