Superior National at Lutsen hosted the third annual “Rally For The Cure” golf event July 18 and 19. It was a big success and everyone enjoyed the warm, sunny days of golf.
More importantly, awareness and early detection for breast cancer was the focus for the participants. In the U.S., a woman has a one in eight risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. That is one out of eight mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts neighbors, co-workers, community members. When breast cancer is detected early before it spreads beyond the breast, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.
“For me and my wife, breast cancer has affected both sides of our families,” said Head Golf Professional and Rally Ambassador, Heath Ekstrom. “I lost my grandmother in 1986 and my wife, Leah, has an aunt who is a six-year survivor of breast cancer. So hosting this event is close to our hearts.”
Superior National at Lutsen has been proud to hold such an event and is excited for next year’s event scheduled for July 17 – 18.
“We had 72 players this year, up from 63 last year. That’s a good jump in participation. I’d love to see next year have over 80 golfers,” said Ekstrom.
This year the event raised over $3,700 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is the largest grass roots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Since its inception in 1996, “Rally For The Cure” fundraising events have resulted in more than $45 million in support of cancer research and studies.
Along with Superior National, Ekstrom wishes to thank the local community members and businesses who supported the event with donations and time: Bluefin Bay Resort, Fish Out Of Water Gifts, Joynes Department Store, Lake Superior Trading Post, Lutsen Mountains, Lutsen Resort, North Shore Dairy, Sawbill Outfitters, Silver Bay Golf Course and Water’s Edge.
