Superior National at Lutsen hosted the “Rally for the Cure,” an 18-hole golf scramble and social on Saturday and Sunday, July 14 – 15. This is the sixth year that Superior National has joined the rally against breast cancer.
The social for contestants on Saturday included great food and the chance for participants to get to know one another. On Sunday, 72 golfers hit the course for the 18-hole scramble. The day’s activities kicked off with golf cart decoration in the morning with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. On the course there were extra contests such as “closest to the pin,” “longest putt made,” “hit into the pool” and other fun games.
Golfer Mary Brislance said everyone enjoyed the event. “It’s more about having fun and raising money than golf!” she laughed.
Some fabulous raffle prizes were awarded after lunch. Each participant received a goody bag with important breast health information, other Rally items and a subscription to a select Conde Nast magazine such as SELF, Bon Appétit or of course—Golf Digest.
“We were very pleased with the turnout for the event,” said Superior National’s Heath Ekstrom, the Rally ambassador. “The event brought together our members and the community, plus women from across Minnesota and Canada for an important cause.”
The mission of Rally for the Cure is “to empower people to take action in the fight against breast cancer by providing a platform for them to educate their family, friends and community on the importance of early detection through an activity they are passionate about.”
“The success of ‘Rally’ is attributed to volunteer ambassadors like Heath. It is their enthusiasm, energy and support we value in our commitment to support Susan G. Komen,” said Diane Perillo, program manager, Rally for the Cure.
Ekstrom said the cause is very special to him. He said, “I lost my grandmother to breast cancer and I feel I’m doing my part for the future of other women, like my wife and daughter, in the fight against breast cancer.”
Ekstrom said he was pleased with the turnout and that the event raised $3,000. He said he would like to continue to grow the event to 100 golfers, earning even more for the fight against breast cancer. Anyone who would like to know how to take part in next year’s event is encouraged to contact Ekstrom at (218) 663-7195.
More than 2 million people have participated in Rally for the Cure events across the nation since its inception in 1996. Over $65 million has been raised at Rally events to help fund life-saving breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.
