Raising questions is not persecution

Responding to the July 25 letter by Deb Vannet, who has always been kind to me.

Deb, the accidental death of your son was tragic, and no amount of consolation is really sufficient.

I have known three such disasters among family and friends, each the result of a car accident. It leaves one torn, shattered. I wish you comfort.

Secondly, although I am keenly interested in the natural history of Lake Superior, the rocks that clutter my house are neither magic nor a matter of worship. No superpowers. No miracles. I feel privileged to live here on the north shore and am content to be a part of its biological community to which we both belong.

We are continuously subjected to religious spiel without which I would have no reason to comment. When a statement made includes “God tells us,” “God knows,” “God wants,” “God does” such and such, this qualifies as hearsay. It is not persecution to raise questions. I do not “bash” anyone.

Please, as my mother used to urgently say, “Use your head!”
